France is increasingly recognized on the international stage, consistently ranking among the top five countries awarded at global advertising festivals.<br>As a result, French advertising is no longer only made by the French. More and more foreign talent are trying their luck in Paris. In agencies, they\u2019re sometimes referred to as \u201cinternationals.\u201d<br>But who are these \u201cinternationals\u201d? Meet C\u00e9dric. He comes from Belgium. And yes, he\u2019s an \u201cinternational.\u201d While we might sometimes think of Belgium and France as being practically the same, C\u00e9dric explains why they\u2019re not\u2014and why advertising in the so-called \u201cflat country\u201d is anything but flat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-0cef1b6833ce834404c2efb4ebe0144b\"><strong>FRAN\u00c7AIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Si on dit souvent que l\u2019\u00e2ge d\u2019or de la pub est derri\u00e8re nous, ce qui est vrai sur certains points ne l\u2019est pas forc\u00e9ment sur d\u2019autres. La France est de plus en plus reconnue \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger. Le pays \u00e9tant r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement class\u00e9 dans le top 5 des pays les plus r\u00e9compens\u00e9s dans les festivals internationaux.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">R\u00e9sultat : la publicit\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise n\u2019est plus seulement faite pas des Fran\u00e7ais. De plus en plus de talents \u00e9trangers tentent leur chance \u00e0 Paris. Ceux qu\u2019on appelle parfois en agence les \u00ab&nbsp;internationaux&nbsp;\u00bb.\u2028&nbsp;\u2028Mais c\u2019est qui les internationaux ? Ici, c\u2019est C\u00e9dric. Il nous vient de Belgique et oui, c\u2019est un \u00ab&nbsp;international&nbsp;\u00bb. Car si on peut parfois penser que la Belgique et la France, c\u2019est la m\u00eame chose, C\u00e9dric nous explique pourquoi non. Can you tell us more about you?\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I arrived in Belgium after fleeing Burundi during the civil war. There, I developed a strong interest for visual arts, mainly due to Belgium\u2019s history with comic strips. So I started my post-high school education at Saint-Luc, in Brussels. I had no real sense of what the real advertising world was, unaware of what even a Cannes Lion is. I just loved the idea that we could be able to influence behavior with creativity. This thought was first introduced to me by my French teacher in high school, who out of nowhere decided to teach advertising for a day. I loved it, even if it was very rudimentary. After that I started collecting and hanging random funny or cool looking ads on my wardrobe doors.<br><br>Back to Saint-Luc. Teachers there were mainly focusing on craft, which is fine. But it\u2019s only one part of what advertising is, at least what I find interesting in our job. On top of that, there was no option (back then at least) for putting us on the market with what you guys in France have, like the \u00ab&nbsp;alternance&nbsp;\u00bb system or even pushing for internships. Since then, I\u2019ve heard that the school got way more serious on that department and is doing much better on educating the next generation.<br><br>Unfortunately, that wasn\u2019t the case back then. If you wanted immediate contacts and an open door to the industry, you had to go to a more private school which made you pay ten times what I was paying at Saint-Luc. Not an option for me. As soon as I got my diploma, I was out, with no contacts, no team partner and no real sense of what the hell this job is. So I just started kicking doors the way I could, barely finding an internship at JWT (RIP) thanks to now retired Jean-Luc Walraff who was the ECD back then and felt like giving me a chance (I still don\u2019t know why, when I glance at my student book). He was known for that William Lawsons ad with Sharon Stone:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-1a0fd50e8fe2bf8104a6917bc5df4135\">Salut C\u00e9dric, peux-tu nous raconter un peu d\u2019o\u00f9 tu viens&nbsp;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Je suis arriv\u00e9 en Belgique apr\u00e8s avoir fui le Burundi pendant la guerre civile. L\u00e0-bas, je me suis d\u00e9couvert une vraie passion pour les arts visuels, en grande partie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la grande histoire de la bande dessin\u00e9e belge. J\u2019ai donc commenc\u00e9 mes \u00e9tudes post-bac \u00e0 Saint-Luc, \u00e0 Bruxelles. \u00c0 ce moment-l\u00e0, je n\u2019avais aucune id\u00e9e de ce qu\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment le monde de la publicit\u00e9. Je ne savais m\u00eame pas ce qu\u2019\u00e9tait un Lion \u00e0 Cannes. J\u2019aimais simplement l\u2019id\u00e9e de pouvoir influencer les comportements gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9.\u2028Cette pens\u00e9e m\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 introduite pour la premi\u00e8re fois par mon prof de Fran\u00e7ais au lyc\u00e9e, qui, sans pr\u00e9venir, avait d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de faire un cours sur la pub. <br><br>J\u2019ai ador\u00e9, m\u00eame si c\u2019\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s basique. Apr\u00e8s \u00e7a, je me suis mis \u00e0 collectionner et accrocher des pubs dr\u00f4les ou cool sur les portes de mon armoire.\u2028\u2028Retour \u00e0 Saint-Luc. <br>L\u00e0-bas, les profs \u00e9taient surtout ax\u00e9s sur le craft. Ce qui est bien. Mais ce n\u2019est qu\u2019une partie de la pub. <br>En tout cas, de ce que je trouve int\u00e9ressant dans notre m\u00e9tier. <br><br>En plus, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque du moins, il n\u2019y avait pas vraiment de dispositif pour nous connecter au march\u00e9, contrairement \u00e0 la France avec le syst\u00e8me de l\u2019alternance. Depuis, J\u2019ai entendu dire que l\u2019\u00e9cole a beaucoup \u00e9volu\u00e9 sur ce point. Tant mieux pour la nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Mais \u00e0 mon \u00e9poque, si tu voulais des contacts directs avec l\u2019industrie, il fallait aller dans une \u00e9cole priv\u00e9e\u2026 dix fois plus ch\u00e8re que ce que je payais \u00e0 Saint-Luc. Donc pas une option pour moi.\u2028\u2028D\u00e8s que j\u2019ai eu mon dipl\u00f4me, je suis sorti sans contact, sans bin\u00f4me, sans r\u00e9el aper\u00e7u de ce que ce m\u00e9tier implique. Alors j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 frapper aux portes comme je pouvais. J\u2019ai fini par d\u00e9crocher un stage chez JWT (paix \u00e0 son \u00e2me), gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Jean-Luc Walraff, l\u2019ECD de l\u2019\u00e9poque. C\u2019est lui qui m\u2019a donn\u00e9 ma chance (je ne sais toujours pas pourquoi quand je revois mon book d\u2019\u00e9tudiant). My day to day was: internship at JWT, then cashier at a local supermarket after work from 7pm to 9pm, then barman at a club from 10pm to 3am (all this to pay what we call a \u00ab\u00a0kot\u00a0\u00bb in Belgium, which is a small student apartment). This weird rhythm lasted 6 months. Afterwards, I started looking for more experience here and there that could help me focus solely on making creative work and not scanning milk bottles or making cocktails for a drunk Jean-Claude Van Damme (true story). <br><br>So I started freelancing. I started very small, for very small agencies, in an already very small country with very small brands. Then I worked for Leo Burnett, Publicis and VML. Through it all, I never forgot what made me start all this: anything can be an ad. Advertising is actually the cheatcode to experience everything life can offer. One day you can decide to make a videogame, the other day start a street basketball contest, the day after open a tattoo shop\u2026 It\u2019s fantastic. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever get tired of it.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-7d29299dd5618a9aaa833f42e6363acf\">Can you share some campaigns you did in Belgium?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A videogame on Roblox destined to help children identify pedophiles online and keep their digital playground safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>J\u2019ai fait ce stage entre deux petits boulots. Ma routine \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque : journ\u00e9e de stage chez JWT, puis caissier dans un supermarch\u00e9 local de 19h \u00e0 21h, puis barman dans un club de 22h \u00e0 3h du matin (tout \u00e7a pour payer ce qu\u2019on appelle un \u00ab kot \u00bb en Belgique, un petit studio \u00e9tudiant). Ce rythme \u00e9trange a dur\u00e9 six mois. Ensuite, j\u2019ai cherch\u00e9 des exp\u00e9riences ici et l\u00e0 pour pouvoir me consacrer uniquement \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation, sans devoir scanner des bouteilles de lait ou faire des cocktails pour un Jean-Claude Van Damme bourr\u00e9 (true story).<br>J\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 faire du freelance. Tout petit au d\u00e9but, pour de toutes petites agences, dans un pays d\u00e9j\u00e0 minuscule, avec de toutes petites marques. Puis j\u2019ai boss\u00e9 chez Leo Burnett, Publicis et VML. Tout en n\u2019oubliant jamais pourquoi j\u2019avais commenc\u00e9 :\u00a0tout peut devenir une pub. La pub, c\u2019est un peu le cheat code pour exp\u00e9rimenter tout ce que la vie peut offrir. Un jour tu cr\u00e9es un jeu vid\u00e9o, le lendemain tu lances un tournoi de streetball, le surlendemain tu ouvres un salon de tatouage\u2026 C\u2019est fantastique. It was supposed to be an ode to the most disgusting John Does you meet, the weirdos that get too close, the misfits, the strangers we missed during that time where everything needed to be sanitized. We didn\u2019t win it, but it got recycled into 3 smaller commercials for another client of the agency (a famous radio company called Studio Brussels) who loved the approach.<br>As you can see, those are very small brands, with small budgets and scale. But I enjoyed coming up with those tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-dfb2b0188ebee551112c00e3e8df7751\">What led you to move to Paris?\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 34, I felt like it was time to explore other ways to approach our job. I\u2019ve always wanted to experience advertising abroad, so witnessing the Belgian market getting smaller and smaller helped making the leap. The problem with the Belgian market is that it\u2019s so cluttered, and agencies fight mostly for brands that only exist in Belgium. With the years, it\u2019s getting harder and harder to be noticed internationally if you have to explain in your casemovie what the brand is or does in your little country, especially when judges have seen hundreds of cases before yours and it\u2019s almost lunch. It\u2019s not impossible of course, but it\u2019s much easier with internationally known brands that already cemented what they\u2019re all about. <br><br>Because I\u2019m attached to family, working outside Europe wasn\u2019t an option, even if first talks about working in NY were emerging thanks to a friend working over there (coucou Idriss). I speak French, Dutch, English and a bit of Swahili, so it definitely helped with feeling comfortable at almost any table (still working on my Japanese). I started freelancing in Amsterdam for Budweiser and Vodafone before getting a call to work in Paris at Dentsu Creative, where I immediately started working on a TV commercial for Saudi Arabia\u2019s National Day, which, scale wise, ultimately feels bigger than I\u2019ve been accustomed to, especially when your client is the king. So here I am in Paris, since a year and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-d75734b679c279dc5930761eae9a93ff\">What differences do you see between advertising in France and in \u2028Belgium?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In France, there is only one language (crazy, right?) and the budgets tend to be bigger. Both might feel like a plus, but they aren\u2019t necessarily a good thing for the brain.<br>First of all, Belgian creatives have to adapt in 2 or 3 languages (French, Dutch, German), so wordplays are to be avoided, unlike France. Which means that Belgian creatives are encouraged to find ideas that rely on a strong insight instead of a lazy joke.<br><br>Secondly, smaller budgets mean that we need to find greater tensions and weird, unexpected executions in order to stand out in the creative world (more on that later).<br>Because of that, the use of absurd is also stronger in Belgium. It helps to stand out in a more abrupt way. I\u2019m wondering if the Belgian approach to advertising can be exported to France. The way Belgium and France understand absurdity is different. Humor is different. But there is hope&nbsp;: Marcel\u2019s campaign for Khiel\u2019s made with real pubic hair, for example. Or (aside from the divisive craft) Josiane\u2019s film for Valentin Ha\u00fcy, with 60+ friends piercing their eyes during a birthday party.<br><br>In terms of processes, I feel like France is a bit more procedural than Belgium. The latter tends mostly to avoid unnecessary internal clutter if it helps making the idea live. In general, I feel like Belgium tries more to see what the idea does well before finding reasons to kill it.<br>In general, I personally find that we, as a whole, should ask ourselves more \u00ab&nbsp;what if the idea works&nbsp;\u00bb instead of \u00ab&nbsp;what if it doesn\u2019t&nbsp;\u00bb.<br><br>In the end, the worst that can happen for a brand is not a backlash. In fact, most brands that experienced one have seen their sales skyrocket. The real fear brands should have is being ignored. What might look like a \u00ab&nbsp;risky&nbsp;\u00bb idea is often the safest way for a brand to survive.<br>I\u2019ll end this question on a positive note for France: the French ad industry is more diverse in every way. I can count on my fingers the amount of POC I saw or worked with in Belgian offices, let alone people with different handicaps, neurodivergences, religions or sexualities. This is not only damaging for the quality of work released in the Belgian culture, but also on how the new generation perceives the field or even how colleagues perceive each other. But they\u2019re trying to get better. Let\u2019s wait and see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-40f3401565c893c6e53f0ee2548700da\">Tell us a bit more about Belgian advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2028Let\u2019s start with a few Belgian classics, just to warm things up:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p>Fun fact : c\u2019\u00e9tait initialement une id\u00e9e pour Jupiler (la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre bi\u00e8re belge), pens\u00e9e comme une ode \u00e0 tous les gens chelous et un peu d\u00e9gueu qu\u2019on croise en festival. On n\u2019a pas gagn\u00e9 le pitch, mais l\u2019id\u00e9e a \u00e9t\u00e9 recycl\u00e9e en trois petits films pour un autre client de l\u2019agence :\u00a0Studio Brussels, une grande radio belge qui a ador\u00e9 l\u2019approche.\u2028Comme tu peux le voir, ce sont des petites marques avec de petits budgets. Mais je me suis bien amus\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-cbe8d97c5d0eb172f595fd595fb498cd\">Pourquoi as-tu d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de venir \u00e0 Paris ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 34 ans, j\u2019ai eu envie d\u2019explorer d\u2019autres mani\u00e8res d\u2019aborder ce m\u00e9tier. J\u2019ai toujours voulu travailler \u00e0 l\u2019international, et voir le march\u00e9 belge se r\u00e9tr\u00e9cir n\u2019a fait qu\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer le saut. Le souci du march\u00e9 belge, c\u2019est qu\u2019il est satur\u00e9, et que les agences se battent pour des marques\u2026 qui n\u2019existent qu\u2019en Belgique. Donc pour exister \u00e0 l\u2019international, c\u2019est de plus en plus dur. Surtout quand tu dois expliquer ce qu\u2019est la marque en question dans ton case movie \u00e0 des jur\u00e9s qui ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu 300 cases avant le tien et qui pensent \u00e0 leur d\u00e9jeuner.\u00a0\u2028\u2028<br><br>Ce n\u2019est pas impossible, mais c\u2019est plus simple avec des marques connues, dont l\u2019univers est d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9tabli. Comme je suis tr\u00e8s proche de ma famille, bosser hors de l\u2019Europe n\u2019\u00e9tait pas envisageable. M\u00eame si des premi\u00e8res discussions pour bosser \u00e0 New York \u00e9mergeaient (coucou Idriss). <br><br>Je parle fran\u00e7ais, n\u00e9erlandais, anglais et un peu swahili, donc \u00e7a a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 ce que je me sente \u00e0 l\u2019aise \u00e0 presque toutes les tables (je travaille toujours mon japonais).<br>\u2028J\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 par freelancer \u00e0 Amsterdam pour Budweiser et Vodafone, avant de recevoir un appel pour bosser \u00e0 Paris chez\u00a0Dentsu Creative, o\u00f9 j\u2019ai tout de suite boss\u00e9 sur une pub TV pour la f\u00eate nationale de l\u2019Arabie Saoudite. Je suis \u00e0 Paris depuis un an et demi maintenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-36ea83afe3854ae67e7d53b9c9abecd7\">Quelles diff\u00e9rences vois-tu entre la pub en France et en Belgique ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e9j\u00e0, en France,\u00a0il n\u2019y a qu\u2019une langue\u00a0(dingue, non ?) et les\u00a0budgets sont plus gros. \u00c7a peut sembler \u00eatre un avantage, mais ce n\u2019est pas forc\u00e9ment bon pour le cerveau. Les cr\u00e9atifs belges doivent s\u2019adapter \u00e0 2 voire 3 langues (fran\u00e7ais, n\u00e9erlandais, allemand), donc les jeux de mots sont \u00e0 \u00e9viter. Ce qui pousse les cr\u00e9atifs \u00e0\u00a0chercher des id\u00e9es fond\u00e9es sur un vrai insight, plut\u00f4t qu\u2019une blague facile.\u2028\u2028Ensuite, les petits budgets nous obligent \u00e0 trouver des\u00a0tensions plus fortes et des ex\u00e9cutions plus inattendues\u00a0pour se d\u00e9marquer. L\u2019absurde est donc plus pr\u00e9sent en Belgique. \u00c7a aide \u00e0 sortir du lot, souvent de mani\u00e8re plus brutale. Je me demande si cette approche belge peut s\u2019exporter en France. L\u2019absurde est compris diff\u00e9remment. <br><br>L\u2019humour aussi. Mais il y a de l\u2019espoir : la campagne de Marcel pour Khiel\u2019s avec des vrais poils pubiens\u00a0; ou encore, malgr\u00e9 un craft clivant, le film de Josiane avec de vieux amis cinquantenaires qui se percent les yeux \u00e0 un anniversaire.\u2028\u2028C\u00f4t\u00e9 process, j\u2019ai l\u2019impression que la France est plus bureaucratique. La Belgique, elle, a tendance \u00e0 \u00e9viter les lourdeurs internes quand \u00e7a peut permettre \u00e0 une id\u00e9e de vivre. <br><br>Globalement, j\u2019ai l\u2019impression qu\u2019en Belgique on cherche plus \u00e0\u00a0voir ce que l\u2019id\u00e9e peut apporter\u00a0avant de chercher des raisons de l\u2019\u00e9liminer. D\u2019ailleurs, je pense qu\u2019on devrait tous se poser plus souvent cette question : \u00ab Et si \u00e7a marchait ? \u00bb plut\u00f4t que \u00ab Et si \u00e7a foirait ? \u00bb<br>\u2028Au final,\u00a0le pire pour une marque, ce n\u2019est pas un bad buzz. La plupart de celles qui ont connu des bad buzz ont vu leurs ventes exploser. Le vrai danger, c\u2019est\u00a0l\u2019indiff\u00e9rence. Ce qui peut sembler risqu\u00e9 est souvent\u00a0la voie la plus s\u00fbre\u00a0pour survivre.\u2028\u2028<br><br>Et pour finir sur une note positive pour la France : l\u2019industrie publicitaire fran\u00e7aise est\u00a0plus diverse \u00e0 tous les niveaux. Je peux litt\u00e9ralement compter sur mes doigts le nombre de personnes de couleur que j\u2019ai crois\u00e9s ou avec qui j\u2019ai boss\u00e9 dans des agences belges. Sans parler des personnes en situation de handicap, neurodivergentes, de religions ou de sexualit\u00e9s diff\u00e9rentes. C\u2019est non seulement un frein \u00e0 la qualit\u00e9 cr\u00e9ative, mais aussi \u00e0 la perception du m\u00e9tier par les jeunes, ou m\u00eame entre coll\u00e8gues. Mais la Belgique essaie de s\u2019am\u00e9liorer.
